18 manufacturing plants and two dedicated R&D centres. It is driven by a skilled
workforce of over 10,500 people.

Mr. Umesh Modi, a distinguished industrialist and global business leader, has transformed the Group into a multinational enterprise with a strong presence across diverse sectors including pharmaceuticals, healthcare, nutrition, color cosmetics, personal care, sugar, liquor, welding electrodes, sponge iron & steel, power generation, pet care, real estate, and more. Renowned for his strategic foresight and commitment to innovation, Mr. Modi has forged enduring collaborations with leading companies in Europe and the United States, bringing advanced technologies and trusted global brands to India. His vision continues to inspire sustainable growth and a culture of integrity across the Group.
A Chemical Engineer and Gold Medallist from Banaras Hindu University, he brings technical expertise and academic excellence to his leadership journey. Recognized for his leadership, he has held prestigious leadership positions of multiple national industry associations including, The Steel Furnace Association of India, Western U.P. Sugar Mills Association, Steel Wire Manufacturers Association of India, and Sponge Iron Association of India, as well as President of the Institute of Economic Studies. He was awarded “Man of the Year” by Ministry of Industries in the year 1984.
Beyond business, he has championed community development by transforming Modinagar into an industrial hub while supporting employment, education, skill development, and social welfare initiatives, including schools, sports facilities, free meals, and healthcare services.

Late Shri Rai Bahadur Gujarmal Modi
The foundation of Modi Group was laid by Mr. Umesh Modi’s father, late Shri Rai Bahadur Gujarmal Modi, who established a Sugar factory in 1933 in Begumabad, Uttar Pradesh, India. In a decade’s time he set up an industrial township of his own. In 1945 the British honoured him by naming Begumabad as ‘Modinagar’.
With unwavering determination and extraordinary foresight, he transformed a modest enterprise into a dynamic conglomerate that became one of India’s leading industrial powerhouses by the 1960s. Guided by his bold spirit, the Modi Group ventured far beyond sugar, diversifying into iron & steel, oil, vanaspati, tyres, nylon threads, yarn, lanterns, soaps, and dehydrated foods. His vision went beyond building industries - he built a community and a vibrant township complete with housing for workers, schools, hospitals, temples, and gardens. It was a living symbol of his belief that true progress uplifts people, not just profits.
In 1968, Shri Rai Bahadur Gujarmal Modi was honoured with the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India. His enduring legacy continues to inspire the Group, driving our commitment to innovation, excellence, and social responsibility, while keeping us firmly anchored in our values.

Founded in 1963 by Shri Rai Bahadur Gujarmal Modi, the Laxmi Narain Mandir stands as a testament to The Umesh Modi Group’s deep-rooted commitment to society, spiritual well- being, and cultural heritage. The temple fosters a sense of inner peace and spiritual growth, enabling the community from all walks of life to connect with their faith and find solace in times of need. Guided by the principles of devotion, compassion, and harmony, the temple nurtures the spiritual well-being of all. The temple is a focal point for the celebration of numerous religious festivals and cultural events in Modinagar.

Shrimati Dayawati Modi (wife of Shri Gujarmal Modi) had a vision that every child in Modinagar should have access to quality education. Today, the Group runs three schools under the Daya Charitable Trust, providing excellent education to thousands of students:

The Umesh Modi Group undertakes water harvesting and plantation drives in Modinagar. These initiatives are aimed at conserving water, enhancing green cover and contributing to the ecological balance of the environment. Through these drives we empower residents and encourage collective action towards environmental stewardship. As part of its sustainability initiative the Group company SBEC Sugar meets its entire power requirement through captive generation using bagasse and exports surplus power to the state power grid.
